In conclusion, stars, like films, operate as ideological tools. In promoting a pattern of behavior concordant with the perceived interests of the establishment stars "can be used to gloss over ambiguities and instabilities in society by individualizing social and economic problems and resolving them on a personal level by use of their star charisma" (Un-named www.) this shows how 'stars' such as Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe are crucial components in relation to society and film because they provide the main substance of the reason the public attend the movies; that of escapism, sex and fantasy. Consequently this also explains the 'stars' importance to the movie business sometimes known as 'dreamland' as the above mentioned factors of sex and fantasy provide the defining foundations of the entire industry. In closing minus the stars the movies would cease to exist and without the movies society would be balancing on unrest.…
