Social Classes
-In Russia there were huge differences between the rich and the poor. About 80% of the population was peasants, many of whom could not read or write. In the towns workers were squashed into very poor accommodation. Political parties tried to make use of these conditions.
*Distrust in the Tsar
-The Tsar kept dismissing the Duma and then changing its organization. The Tsar was disconnected with his people; this created distrust in their minds.
*World War I
-When Russia got involved in the 1st World War the country was unprepared for war and Germany routed Russia. Nicholas headed to the front to take on the war and thought everything was fine back home, however things were desperate. People were starving to death because the railroad system was poor and this caused prices to soar on food goods. When Nicholas tried to return to Petrograd his train was stopped and he was forced to abdicate his throne and a provisional government was set up.
