A democratic society is one in which the power rests with the people, and is exercised by the people or their elected officials. In a direct democracy there are no elected officials, every citizen can participate in decision making processes. This type of system gives absolute power to the people, but it is not practical for large populations. In Canadian democracy, citizens are limited to their representation regarding the amount of influence and control they have over government policies. The reliance on an elected official to voice the concerns of an entire constituency results in a large number of individuals who are left ignored and their opinions neglected. Generally, the only direct action that can be taken by an individual is being able to speak with a Member of Parliament. Citizens of Canada cannot charge into the House of Commons if they wish to address an issue. Instead, the most direct involvement Canadians have with the political process is through elections when they get to communicate their true opinions. …
