The novel „Atonement” is about a crime committed by a thirteen year old girl called Briony for which she will spend the rest of her life trying to atone. In 1935, Briony Tallis is just a little girl with an enormous imagination and as a welcome present for her brother Leon, who is returning from college, she has written a play “The Trials of Arabella” - the characters are to be played by her cousins, 15-year-old Lola and the nine-year-old twins Jackson and Pierrot. Briony’s sister Cecilia and Cecilia’s childhood friend Robbie - the house-keeper’s son, are also home from college and are trying to figure out the confused feelings for each other.
Briony on several occasions witnesses Robbie’s affection for Cecilia, but being only thirteen, she misinterprets what she sees and thinks Robbie is a maniac.
