The definite article has developed from Old English demonstrative pronoun „sē”, thus it is used with any kind of noun – countable or uncountable.
e.g. The movie you told me about was fantastic.
Could you pass me the sugar, please?
THE USE OF THE DEFINITE and (x) ARTICLES
hen we refer to the same thing/person repeatedly
e.g. I read a book. The book was interesting.

With nouns denoting unique things/objects
e.g. the sun, the earth, the moon, the world, the sky
! if a noun is modified by descriptive attribute, we use the indefinite article
e.g. A bright sun blinded us for a moment.

With the nouns modified by the superlative degree of an adjective or by participles
e.g. I just heard the most shocking rumour.
The girl standing in the corner is my sister.…
