Pets can become an important part of a young person’s everyday life because caring for an animal creates a type of responsibility that is different from many ordinary school or household tasks. Homework can sometimes be postponed for an hour, a bedroom can remain untidy for another day, and a forgotten hobby can simply be continued later, but an animal has needs that do not disappear because the owner is tired, busy, bored, or interested in something else.
