As alluded to in by the Player King's speech to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, this movie/play is a play done onstage, which is supposed to happen off. The absurd play is also driven by another aspect concerning fate and destiny. They seem to be controlled by unknown forces, ambiguously living life by the rules and will of others.
Ultimately, the play which explores ideas of existentialism is a reverberation of the original play, Hamlet, and its theme is amplified by the use of questioning and challenging of two characters, trying to figure out the meaning of life, and death, as well as how fate and destiny play roles in their lives. I really enjoyed this movie!
