INITIATING CHANGE AND ETHICAL ISSUES
When the company is facing financial difficulties as a result of implementing plans to invest in high technology equipments and also downturn in sales, the company has to implement measures in order to achieve efficiency at highest level. This was achieved by accomplishing work without overtime. Because the work culture is having overtime with extra pay, many workers resisted the implementation of new work practices. There was high absenteeism. Workers used to connive with fellow workers not to turn up to work when they were requested to do so. It took a couple of weeks of negotiation with workers to make them understand that high tech equipments including low demand on company products took over overtime work. In the end, workers did understand that workers' tactics would only damage employer and employee relationship because the objective of the unit was not met.
CRISIS -
Because the company operates on the Kanban system, deliveries of automotive parts occur during the day and also at night. The unit has a crisis when delivery could not be met as reported by the supervisors and sometimes this situation occurs at night. The supervisors directly inform the materials manager irregardless of the time that deliveries could not be met.
