As far as whether unions are relevant in the United States, I would have to answer Yes, but I cautiously respond to this question and am basing my answer on the fact that they are relevant to certain types of organizations only. I believe that there are many types of organizations such as manufacturing, some industries, and even some retail environments such as Wal-Mart where employees benefit from having a union representing them. For organizations that are highly technical industries, I don't believe that unions can better represent the employees than they can themselves.
Conclusion
At one time, unions were very political and powerful in the United States; however with the changing workforce, diversity amongst employees and global economy, membership within union organizations is considerably down. Even with the decreased membership, it is important that there is union representation amongst certain industries such as the steel industry where my husband works. The union promotes teamwork and challenges management on safety issues making the overall morale of the employees much better than if they were not there.
