CONCLUSION
Narrative constitutes every story and is distinguished according to its genre, form, type, theme, narrator’s presence or absence in the story (homodiegetic, heterodiegetic), the degree of narrator’s awareness of an audience (overt, covert), and the point of view. Narrative can present mixed mode, where more than one narrative situation can be present, it can also have many levels. The main idea of the story is its theme, but the very core of the story is its plot, which is structured according to the chosen genre and is played out by the characters of the story. However, the chosen diction and language is what makes the narrative of the story interesting and defines the author’s style.
The Bad Beginning”, a novel in belles-lettres style written by Daniel Handler under the pseudonym of Lemony Snicket, is a mock-gothic, children’s dystopian fiction. Lemony Snicket, who is also the narrator of the story, is heterodiegetic, authorial, highly overt narrator, who directly addresses his audience, refers to himself and pauses the story to give commentary. “The Bad Beginning” is a mixed mode narrative: retrospective narration is used together with present tense narration; there are also flash-backs, flash-forwards, isochrony, acceleration, pause, and scenic presentation used.
The composition of the story, which starts in medias-res, is based on five elements and follows Freytag’s triangle model. The tellability of the story is to entertain, as well as teach a lesson, warn the children audience that bad things can happen to everyone, not only to those who do not behave. It is achieved by identification by self-recognition and identification for wish fulfilment.
There are six main characters in the story: two dynamic main characters Violet and Klaus, static main character Sunny, stock character Count Olaf, and two foil characters Mr. Poe, Justice Strauss. In addition to the last two, the narrator himself is used as a foil character to the three main characters. Thus, though narrator is omniscient and authorial, this strategy, as well as narrator’s exaggerated tone, leads to a conclusion that the narrator is not reliable.
Therefore, the aim of the study is achieved, narrative strategies in “The Bad Beginning” have been determined and hypothesis proved, i.e., the narrator is not reliable.
