Most Serious Environment Problems in Latvia
Due to the geographical situation of Latvia, there are several transboundary environmental problems.
For example, transboundary pollution of rivers with catchment areas in the territory of neighboring countries and air pollution from similarly located enterprises. Only 3% of the total air pollution is caused by stationary sources in Latvia. It is proven that Germany and Poland cause about 40% of the total sulfur pollution in Latvia; but also 45% of nitrogen oxide pollution come from Germany, Poland and Great Britain. 53% of the total water drainage comes from neighboring countries. Polluted water coming from Belorussia and Lithuania causes additional pollution on the territory of Latvia.
The biggest environmental problem in Latvia is the forest exploitation. Many forests are being hewed out. The Main reason, why it is happening, is a wood. Workers don’t care about flora and fauna, which they destroy. It is sad, because nature helps to keep the people alive, but the people destroy it any way.
