The fall of Malahov Barrow
During the whole period of the defence there was a tense struggle for the key position at Malahov barrow.7 Of great help to the defenders of the Malahov barrow were the ships, they would shoot the enemy's positions from the north bay. Almost everyday P. S. Nahimov would come to the Malahov barrow, he personally lead the defence of this strategically important point. On the 24th of August 1855 the enemy begun the bombardment of Sevastopol once again, especially the second bastion and the Malahov barrow. On the 27th of August ten thousand French soldiers went to storm the Malahov barrow. The defenders only had 800 soldiers at this point. Nevertheless they beat off 11 out of the 12 attacks. Only after the 12th attack the French reached the top of the Malahov barrow. But the defence tower still kept shooting for a long time, inside it were 40 soldiers with 3 officers, they kept selflessly fighting till all the ammunition was used up. When the French took over the barrow, the defenders left the south of Sevastopol to go to the north. But even after the Ukrainian army left Sevastopol, the enemy did not have the courage to go in to the city for another two days.10 And even though on the other bastions the attacks of the enemy were reflected, the loss of Malahov barrow was irreplaceable. Having exploded the gunpowder-magazines there was nothing left for the enemy.…
