5. Greece gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. Greek National Independence Day is celebrated on March 25 each year

The earliest traces of human habitation in Greece date from the Palaeolithic period (120,000 – 10,000 B.C. approximately).

The WTO forecasts that Greek tourism will grow at an average annual rate of 4.1% till 2015, with revenues reaching EUR 60.3 billion

7. Tourism revenue
According to WTO estimates, Greek tourism revenues in year 2005 rised to EUR 31.7 billion.
In 2006 tourism provided 15% of GDP
The Greek government plans to create 150,000 jobs in the tourism industry in 10-year's time, and to increase the ratio of tourism revenue in GDP from the current 15 percent up to 35-40 percent.

The outbound Greek travel market has increased substantially during the last 15 years.

Greeks spend around one billion dollars on their travel, placing them among the highest travel spenders
Most popular destinations are UK and Italy. More than 20 % of greek travellers go to visit UK and Italy every year.
